East Providence wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Animal in my car: how to get it out
When it is cold and dark outside, there is no cozier feeling than being warm and snug in your car. Unfortunately, wild animals appreciate this feeling just as much as you or I do, meaning a car is an attractive place for a small rodent or squirrel to spend the night in. After all, it is warm, dry, and protected from predators. Thankfully, cars are quite hard to access without a key, meaning these incidents are reasonably rare. However, when they do happen, they can be a nightmare, as there are many places inside your car for an animal to hide. To make this sort of thing less likely to happen, always check that your doors and windows are closed, and that you close the trunk whilst it is still in eyesight. A car bonnet is also an attractive option for animals, so make sure this is locked and sealed at all times. Nevertheless, even with these precautions, an animal may occasionally slip inside, so here are some tips on how to remove it:

Open all doors and windows
Whilst this may seem obvious, this should be your first step when you find an animal inside your car. After all, it may want to leave of its own accord, and simply exit within minutes. Unfortunately, this does not always happen, and more often than not, animals see your car as a perfect nesting site for raising their young. This of course is completely unviable, as it could cause damage to your car and produce a horrendous odor. Therefore, it is imperative you remove the animal before it gets too settled.

Mothballs
Their name may be deceiving, but many say the odor of mothballs is more likely to repel rodents than it is moths. No matter how true that is, it is certainly a fact that small animals find the smell of mothballs very unpleasant, and this is often enough to move them completely. Mothballs are cheap and easy to acquire and often last for months. To try and coax the animal out of your car, you should place mothballs around the general area where the animal is resting. Wait a few hours, and make sure that the animal can see a clear exit from the car that it can leave from. This can simply be an open door. If the animal is gone, be sure to disinfect the surface it was resting on, to avoid harmful illnesses from spreading.

Traps
Eventually, the animal in your car will need to eat. This can be a major incentive for an animal to leave the car, so make sure not to leave any food lying around inside the car that it can eat instead. Therefore, baited traps can be an enticing prospect to hungry animals. Traps can be lethal or non-lethal, but non-lethal traps are recommended as they are generally better quality, reusable, and are very portable. Most work by the weight of an animal triggering a mechanism that closes a door, trapping the animal inside. These traps are easy to acquire and can be found in most hardware stores as well as online. To entice the animal into the trap, bait is of course needed, but this usually simply consists of some food from the kitchen. Leave the trap in the car overnight, freshly baited. By the morning, the animal should be trapped inside. Once you are successful, you can relocate the animal where you see fit, preferably a long way away from your precious car!
